ALBUM RELEASE: Vanishing City recorded by the London Symphony Orchestra
I’m a Scottish composer based in Edinburgh, creating harmonically rich and dramatic music ranging from large-scale orchestral works to intimate electronics. My musical life began as a jazz pianist, and improvisation remains central to my work. I’ve written pieces about binary stars, Slavic folklore, mountains and more — but above all, I take inspiration from the musicians I've worked with, including the LSO, LPO, RLPO, RSNO, Britten Sinfonia, Psappha Ensemble and BCMG NEXT.
My orchestral piece ‘Vanishing City’ featured on a recent album of new music commissioned by the LSO, following Barbican performances under Gianandrea Noseda and Ryan Wigglesworth. ‘Trees Made of Air’ was also included on a Psappha Ensemble recording in partnership with NMC.
2025 commissions included two new pieces for Britten Sinfonia through their Magnum Opus programme: ‘Swell’ for chamber ensemble and a piano concerto entitled ‘Bloodshift’ for soloist Clare Hammond.
This year the LPO will perform 'Léda' at the Queen Elizabeth Hall on 15th July
commissioned through their emerging composers programme, mentored by Sir George Benjamin. The Royal Philharmonic Society has also commissioned a
new work for Ensemble 10:10, the contemporary music ensemble of the RLPO.
I studied composition in London with Julian Anderson and Joseph Phibbs after an Advanced Diploma at Moscow Conservatoire with Alexander Tchaikovsky. I hold Masters degrees in Physics from Imperial College and Jazz Performance from Guildhall, and also spent several years with strategy consulting firm BCG.
